BIOL 3420/3421 - General Microbiology 4


BIOL3420/3421 (4) General Microbiology and General Microbiology Lab will be offered year round (SPRING/FALL) for all science majors. While general microbiology is an exceptionally broad discipline, this course will provide the fundamentals of all major groups of microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae and protozoans). The lecture component of the course will focus on; structure and function of microbes (cellular structures, metabolism, and growth), proper handling of microorganisms, microbial genetics, microbial ecology, microbial diversity, and clinical microbiology with regards to pathogen identification (immunity, epidemiology, control of microbes, and diseases). The laboratory component will be scheduled to coincide with the lecture material so that lecture concepts will be enhanced. During lab period students will be exposed to key microbial biotechnology techniques such as, PCR, gel electrophoresis, restriction enzyme cloning, microscopy, and biochemical assays.  2 lecture classes per week (1.5 hr each), 1 lab class per week (3 hr) Prerequisite(s): General Biology I and Lab (BIOL1110/BIOL1111) or General Biology II and Lab (BIOL1120/1121) is required to have been completed with a grade of “C” or better, before registering for this course. Corequisite(s): Students enrolled in General Microbiology BIOL3420, must also be enrolled in BIOL3421 General Microbiology Lab the same semester. $35 Lab Fee Yes FALL/SPRING CIP
