AGSC 5800 - Biogeochemistry 3

This course brings together concepts from physics, chemistry, biology, and geology to introduce the students to the field of Biogeochemistry.  This course focuses on biogeochemical cycles and related environmental issues such as global climate change, eutrophication, and acid deposition in agriculture, forest and aquatic environment. The transformation and movement of carbon, major nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus) and trace elements are discussed in the context of agricultural production, forestry, watershed ecology and societal implications. The overall objective of the course is to have students develop an interdisciplinary appreciation for how the Earth’s chemistry is influenced by physical, biological, and geological processes.  One 3-hour lecture per week. Basic plant, soil and chemistry knowledge (AGSC 1200, 2200 and CHEM 1110 or equivalents) is required. The course is intended for science majors. Prerequisite(s): AGSC 1200, 2200 and CHEM 1110 or equivalents
