Comprehensive Examinations The MSW is a non-thesis program. The culminating experience for the MSW program will be a written comprehensive examination completed in the student’s final semester of study. The exam incorporates both the application of research and the integration of classroom and field-based learning experiences. Information about the comprehensive exam will be provided in the SOWK 6300 - Empirical Social Work Practice (4) course during that final semester. Practicum - Field education is one of the cornerstones of professional social work education. During their field practicum, MSW students have the opportunity to apply what they are learning in the classroom to real world situations. They also can bring their field practicum experiences back to the classroom for reflection, examination, analysis, and synthesis.
- The Foundation internship is 400 hours and can be completed in a Spring semester block or can be spread over both the Spring and Summer semesters. This first practicum experience provides experiential learning of generalist social work practice in selected human service agencies.
- The Concentration internship is 500 hours and can be completed in a Spring semester block or can be spread over both the Spring and Summer semesters. This practicum experience provides the student with an individualized, educationally focused experience in advanced generalist social work practice.
- Employment based internships for those students already employed in a social work setting are encouraged, as long as a new learning experience can be provided to the student. Guidelines for employment based internships can be found in the TSU-MSW Field Education Manual.
