Program Overview
The Holistic Nursing curriculum focuses on holistic philosophy, ancient healing traditions, complementary and alternative interventions, self-care, and self-healing as part of the Program’s focus. Upon completion of the Holistic Nursing certificate the students will be able to:
- Recognize the totality of the human being and how this influences healing, patient care, and patient self-care.
- Integrate self-care, self-responsibility, spirituality, and reflection in their lives allowing a greater awareness of the interconnectedness and its relationship to the healing process.
- Provides leadership in holism for health care providers and systems
Admission Requirements
Nurses who hold a Master of Science in Nursing degree from a nationally accredited program and are interested in continuing study to become a Holistic Nurse may be eligible to enter post graduate studies. The three pre-requisite courses required for advanced practice nursing - Advanced Health Assessment/Advanced Health Assessment Clinical (4 hours), Advanced Pathophysiology (3 hours), and Advanced Pharmacology (3 hours) - need to be completed before beginning the Post Graduate Certificate requirements and may be transferred from the previous graduate degree if completed no more than five (5) years prior to TSU enrollment. If the MSN program from which the applicant graduated did not include all three courses, the three advanced courses may be taken through Tennessee State University before beginning the FNP coursework.

The Holistic Nursing Post-Graduate Certificate focuses on holistic philosophy, ancient healing traditions, complementary and alternative interventions, self-care, and self-healing. There are several trajectories that a graduate could pursue, including aromatherapy, homeopathy, acupuncture, massage therapy, parish nursing, pastoral counseling, nurse coach, and therapist. Graduates of the program will enhance and advance their practice in their chosen settings and be leaders in holistic approaches to nursing care throughout the life span.

Program of Study and Credit Hours Required
Achievement of a Holistic Nursing Post-Graduate Certificate will require the completion of 14 credit hours and all associated clinical hours (500). Students who are completing a post-graduate certificate in Holistic Nursing are required to take NURS 5080, NURS 5170, NURS 5180, and NURS 5190.
