PHTH 6460 - Orthopedics I (4) This course will emphasize physical therapy examination and intervention strategies for the musculoskeletal system and peripheral nervous system of the upper quarter. Included under the examination techniques will be the upper quarter screening exam, peripheral nerve assessment, accessory motion testing, soft tissue assessment and musculoskeletal special tests. Included under treatment techniques will be joint mobilization and manipulation, soft tissue mobilization, application of therapeutic exercise to the different pathologies, and patient education procedures. The anatomical regions covered are the TMJ, the cervical spine, the thoracic spine and ribs, the shoulder, the elbow, and the wrist and the hand. The different musculoskeletal and peripheral nervous system pathologies found within the upper quarter will be studied. Laboratory procedures will be taught throughout the course. Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of all prior required coursework and/or with instructor’s permission.
