The final two years of the program comprise the Professional Officer Course (POC). It consists of three hours of classroom work, two hours of leadership laboratory, and two hours of physical training each week. POC cadets earn a monthly stipend, and tax-free subsistence allowance during the academic year and incur a military obligation after graduation. To be accepted into the POC, students must pass a physical examination, the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT), a physical fitness test, and meet certain academic standards. Cadets must compete for an enrollment allocation for field training normally administered the summer before POC entry.

Field Training (FT) Overview

Field Training is, in most cases, a cadet’s first exposure to a working USAF environment. The goal of Field Training is to develop military leadership and discipline and refine the skills cadets learned in the GMC. The Field Training environment allows commissioned officers to evaluate each cadet’s potential to serve as an officer. Field Training includes aircraft and aircrew orientation, USAF/USSF professional development orientation, marksmanship training, junior officer training, physical fitness, and survival training. The USAF provides uniforms, lodging, and meals at no cost to the cadet.

University Credits

Students must work with their institutions and departments to determine whether AFROTC classes will receive core, core elective, general elective, or any credit at all. A Tennessee State University minor in Aerospace Studies consists of 22 semester hours and is available to those students who complete GMC and POC curricula. A minor may also be obtained at the other institutions.
